What is Yoga?

The word yoga literally means to yoke or union. Meaning, in a person’s experience there is no longer any separation between themselves and the rest of the existence. This is what is known as an arahant, self-realised or enlightenment.

The various systems of yoga are simply methods that help us move towards this state. We start with the gross (body) and move towards the subtler aspects of ourselves (breath and mind).

Through the use of many different techniques (including sound, postures, movement, breath awareness, breathing exercises, relaxation, concentration, self-inquiry and meditation) yoga seeks to cultivate perfect balance and harmony within the human system.

“Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.” – The Bhagavad Gita

How does it relate to mindfulness & meditation?

As the practice integrates the body, mind and breath, it can be supportive for mindfulness practitioners.

The physical postures (asanas) train our attention, increase body and breath awareness, activate the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and relax) and prepare the body for seated meditation and mindfulness practices.

Yoga we offer?

Hatha Yoga Hatha Yoga (traditional) is the science of yoga which purifies the whole physical body by means of shatkarma (purification techniques), asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), mudra (hand postures), bandha (locks) and concentration in preparation for raja yoga (meditative practices) and samadhi.
Beginner courses will support you in feeling confident and safe in the physical postures irrespective of your body shape, size or level of flexibility.
Our facilitators aim to bring you a more traditional integrated well rounded practice.
VinyasaVinyasa (modern) is an adaptation of hatha yoga. It is characterized by stringing postures together so that you move from one to another, seamlessly in a flow.
The practice typically is more dynamic and our facilitators focus on a slow-flow rather than a dynamic fast paced-class.
Restorative YogaRestorative Yoga (modern) is a very gentle practice primarily focused on relaxation. Ample cushions, bolsters and blocks are used to support you in letting-go and unwinding.
The entire practice is aimed to activate the ‘rest and digest’ response or parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) and is deeply rejuvenating for the body and mind.
Yin YogaYin Yoga (modern) is a practice with roots in Taoism. Classes are designed based on the 5 element chart (wood, fire, earth, metal and water) and work on various organs and meridian lines.
Poses are typically held for 3-5 minutes to reach the deeper layers of connective tissue, bones, joints, ligaments, fascia and tendons. The three principles that apply to a yin practice are (1) Come into the pose to the appropriate depth for your body (2) Resolve to be still (3) Hold for time.

What to expect from a yoga class at our hub?

  • Gentle classes.
  • Minimal adjustments.
  • Integrated practice.
  • and focus on cultivating mindfulness.
All of our yoga teachers have completed full training and are registered with Yoga Alliance Australia.

I’m not flexible, can I participate?

We understand. What the posture looks like is definitely not the point! We all come with bodies of different shapes and sizes that may or may not become flexible over time.

The important thing is that your mind becomes flexible – this is how you know you are really progressing in yoga. Our classes are designed with beginners (and the inflexible) in mind, so come along, you’ll be glad you did.

Testimonials

“I absolutely loved the course. It was perfect for a beginner or even someone wanting to refresh their yoga practice. Sophie was brilliant with everyone and asked people individually if they were ok and if they had any injuries or issues she could help with, and show alternative poses etc.

The structure of the course worked really well with some excellent background info during the first class. The importance of meditation and yogic breathing exercises was discussed at the start of the course, which was excellent. Classes I’ve attended at other yoga studios have been based mostly around asanas, and no mention of the Eight Limbs of Yoga at all, so I was happy we received a more holistic overview. Sophie made sure meditation and breathing practices were included in the later part of every class during the six-week course.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the course and Sophie’s gentle, helpful, and caring style of teaching was perfect for a beginner’s course. Everyone felt at ease and safe to go at their own pace, knowing there was always help from Sophie if and when they needed it.

I will recommend the course to everyone and the Hub in general, as I’ve found it to have such a wonderful atmosphere. The people that run the courses and the volunteers are all so super helpful and lovely. I will be back for drop-in classes very soon!”Martin M.

Thank you it was fabulous. I really enjoyed it and found it very useful in calming , stretching and awakening the body as well as the mind.Anonymous
